Britain Day

05 Jun '07, 18:15

Politicans have floated the idea of a new bank holiday to celebrate our nation and culture, and to enhance the sense of Britishness amongst it's citizens.

It's not often that I'll praise an idea put forward by Labour ministers, but I'm in full favour of this plan. There seems to be very little that brings the nation together, other than the Football World Cup. We need to celebrate what it is that makes us British and our nation great.

Of course, a bank holiday is a bonus that would hopefully win over skeptics of this idea. I'm sure there will be those people who insist that there is nothing about our culture to celebrate, unless you want to celebrate binge drinking on a Friday night or school knife attacks, but I think identifying positive aspects of our culture could help to reduce the negative aspects.

It would be nice to have this bank holiday take place in early to mid July so that it falls nicely between the Spring Bank Holiday and Summer Bank Holiday, and also has a reasonable chance of good weather. That way, towns can hold street events such as live music, carnivals or other events that could focus on key proud moments in Britain's history. Maybe residents could hold street parties meaning that neighbours start to get to know each other again. A Proms style evening could be held at the nation's premier venues where orchestras would play the rousing favourites like Land of Hope And Glory and Rule Brittania. National television and radio could cover the events from the four capital cities with drop-in's from local parties.

I think at the very least, it could be an event that's looked forward to by most and brings a sense of good feeling to a nation that is often swamped by bad news and negativity, even if it's not always deserved.
