LOCOG Unveils Olympic Logo04 Jun '07, 18:37Sebastian Coe and The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) has today unveiled the logo of the London 2012 Olympic Games, and I don't like it at all!The aim was to create a logo that appeals to the nation's youth, but I think it does that whilst alienating everyone else. It just looks like it should have been graffittied onto an inner city playground wall back in 1992. Other than the name of our capital city, there is nothing to associate it with London (other than the fact that it could have been graffittied onto an inner city playground wall back in 1992). The name "London" and the Olympic Rings look like they have just been added onto the shapes representing the 2 and 0 of 2012 at the last minute, rather than giving them any serious thought. And the worst of the lot, is that the shapes representing 2012 only barely look like the numbers. At a quick glance they don't really look like anything (like a lot of graffitti - did I mention that?), just jagged bricks. I just don't see what was wrong with the original London 2012 logo - the one with the name London with coloured wavy lines threaded through it in a loose shape of the Thames, and 2012 below it. It was simple, attractive and could easily have been integrated with photos of London. On the BBC News website, there is a showcase of a few of the readers mock ups, some taking the Michael, but others are actually quite good. My favourites include one with the Union Flag inside the outline of London with the Olympic rings and London 2012 in the midddle; and one which has the rings representing Tube stations, with the Tube lines in the Olympic colours. Both of these have a nice connection to the capital or the nation. This connection just isn't present in the real logo. Overall, it's a big dissappointment.
