World Snooker Championship 200708 May '07, 01:21In the last twenty-five minutes, the World Snooker Championship 2007 has come to a close, and John Higgins has won the title for the second time, against Mark Selby. The second session of the match started at 3pm this afternoon and saw Selby 12-4 down against Higgins. And with the former world champion only requiring 6 frames, it looked like it would be over before the evening session even began. But Selby dug his heels in and started to play some great snooker, winning all 6 frames of the session consecutively, narrowing the score line to just 12-10 in Higgins favour. So with a possible 13 frames remaining, the final session got underway at around 8pm. Higgins started to get some points on the board but Selby didn't give in, with the score being narrowed to just 14-13. At this point, it really looked like Selby could overtake Higgins and win the title on the back of one of the greatest comebacks in Crucible history. Higgins was not to be deterred however, and as the evening went on he seemed to become more and more settled regaining his lead to 16-13. Of course Selby was still in with a chance, but it looked as though the late hour could have been taking it's toll with him missing some pots that seemed to go in so easily earlier in the game. However, Selby didn't get much of a chance to get back amongst the balls with Higgins winning the next frame with a break of 129 bringing the score to 17-13. It was certainly a tall order for Selby to win 5 frames in a row at this stage of the game, but he still pulled off some excellent shots with a fantastic plant into the top left corner pocket. Unfortunately a difficult yellow left Higgins with the chance he needed to clear up and win the frame, match and tournament 18-13. I don't think we've seen the last of Mark Selby though. He's shown an excellent ability to perform under the pressure of near defeat. A future world champion? Definately.
