Computer Maintainance11 Jul '04, 00:00More fun with the computers today. On Friday I had some bits delivered - a new PC case for the UKTTW machine (when it's built), a USB 2.0 PCI card, and a new webcam. That evening I tried to install the USB card into the webserver, which wasn't having any of it. As soon as the card went in, the video decided it didn't want to play, but came back to life as soon as I took the card out. I tried all the different PCI slots with no luck at all, so gave up and put the server back together - but with the network card in the wrong slot. This is where todays fun started. With the network card in the wrong slot, Windows (trying to be clever) decided to tell me it had a new network card, but that I couldn't use the settings I wanted because they had already been taken by the 'old' network card (same card in reality, but from a different slot) even though that card was no longer in the system. So I had to re-arrange the system so that it was back to how it was, and then it decided it couldn't find any drivers - even on the driver disk that came with the card. After 3 hours of trying to coax it to work, I gave up and tried another network card. Guess what? Booted up the machine, and it worked straight away, with all the original settings. Was not best pleased at wasting all that time, but I did give the machine an extra 16mb RAM whilst I was at it, so not a dead loss. So now that is working again, I decided to focus my attention on the webcams. The USB card has gone into the Duron (general working and studio PC) without problems, and the two webcams (old Creative Vision and new QuickCam Messenger) have been installed. Both are working side by side OK - except when I need to restart my PC. For some unknown reason, if the Creative camara is plugged in, the machine will hang on startup, but will work fine if it is unplugged. As soon as the machine has started, the camara can be plugged back in and all will work fine. Weird eh? So now to a completely different note. This evening, Kate made me sit down and watch Love Actually (well OK I only watched 2/3rds of it - she's still downstairs watching it now). Now I've heard the reviews that say that it's a great film, star packed and on par with Four Weddings, but I must say - what a complete load of crap. It's one of the most boring films I have seen. 45 minutes into the film, and I was still waiting for it to start. It felt more like a soap watching all these different people fall in love with other people. Some have said to me that it is supposed to be funny, but I failed to notice any comedy. I will say that it was on par with Four Weddings though - I found that boring too.
